Hangover Free Wine at Casa Mia

With the festive season about to get into full swing most people know they will experience a hangover or two over the coming weeks.

However, a popular Italian restaurant called Casa Mia Grande in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, is offering customers the chance to drink an Italian white wine which it claims won't lead to a banging head the following morning.

Called Kardio Fulax - which translates as 'the guardian of the heart' - the wine is said to combat hangovers and allergic reactions as it does not contain any sulphites, a chemical commonly used by winemakers to give their product a longer shelf life. It is priced at £39.95 per 750ml bottle.

According to the EU there is an 'acceptable daily intake' of 0.7mg of sulphites per kg. This means 42mg a day for a 60kg female. A normal medium glass of white wine contains about 26mg of sulphites showing just how easy it is to exceed this limit with only a couple of glasses.

Made from a blend of Trebbiano, Chardonnay and Passerine grapes, only 3,090 bottles of Kardio Fulax will be produced this year at the highly regarded Scialletti vineyard in South West Italy. And Casa Mia Grande's owner Francesco Mazzella has managed to import 300 bottles of this rare wine into the UK, which will complement his existing stock of Kardio Fulax Red.

"This is a beautiful, crisp white wine that is ideal to drink with a whole variety of foods including cheese, white meat, king prawns, salmon and lemon sole," he said. "But what makes it really special is that it does not contain any sulphites which are widely regarded as contributing to hangovers.

"It is now acknowledged by most authorities, including the World Health Organisation, that sulphites are not safe for everyone. Many people are sulphite sensitive and experience terrible hangovers with wines containing just an average level of the chemical. Kardio Fulax is ideal for people who may have that disposition and a refreshing option for those of us without it."

The label on a bottle of Kardio Fulax is a recreation of the traditional bronze shield used by the ancient 'Piceni', the early Iron Age inhabitants of the Adriatic coast of Italy from Rimini to the Sangro River. They introduced the sulphite-free wine making process which is still used today at the Scialletti vineyard so there contribution to wine history is honoured by the label.

Francesco concluded: "The bottles of Kardio Fulax are now kept under lock and key in our temperature controlled wine cellar. My advice is to come and visit us soon to experience this very special wine for yourself - and hopefully say goodbye to your hangover."

The first Casa Mia restaurant was set up in Chapel Allerton by Francesco and his wife Marta Mazzella in 1998. Since then the business has grown and now totals three restaurants - the original Casa Mia Coffee Shop and Casa Mia Grande, both based in the Chapel Allerton area of the city, and Casa Mia Millennium, situated in Millennium Square. Now employing 90 staff, Casa Mia also offers an outside catering service, providing quality catering to locations and events throughout Yorkshire.

Recently winning the title 'Best Italian Restaurant' at the Leeds Restaurant Association Awards, Casa Mia was also awarded 'Best Al-Fresco Dining Area', which it won for its outdoor dining area at Casa Mia Millennium, based in Leeds city centre.
